Advantages of Enterprise Version 8 vs. BDE Version 7

ü

Paradox Table Lock Issues are Eliminated - The problems associated with paradox table locks are removed with the Enterprise Version of AccuBuild since the Enterprise Version is based on a client / server database instead of a local table database.  No more searching for LCK files to delete when a user's workstation hangs up.  The Advantage Database runs as a separate server and when the user connection is lost, the Advantage Database Server (ADS) will recognize the connection loss and automatically close the tables that the user had open.  This avoids data corruption normally associated with local table databases such as the BDE.

ü

Workstation Version of AccuBuild is NOT Required - The AccuBuild Software and the ADS Software are both installed on the file server and all that is required at the workstations is a shortcut icon to the AccuBuild program.  Whenever the AccuBuild program is loaded, the Advantage Client files (dlls) are loaded at the workstation in order to establish the communication between the AccuBuild Program (client) and the Advantage Database (server).

ü

Built for the Future - Unlike the Version 7 local database (BDE), the Advantage Database Server will be ready for the next generation of Windows operating systems including the ".NET" Server and "Longhorn" which is scheduled for release in 2007.  The BDE is no longer supported by Borland as far as fixes and updates, and therefore there is no guarantee that it will run on future versions of Windows.

ü

Transaction Protection – The new database protects the data during posting operations so the postings will roll back automatically and completely without the limitation of smaller batch size.  For example, there is no longer a need to limit the number of accounts payable invoices within a batch and there is no need to disable the transaction tracking during posting.  The BDE was limited to 250 record locks for transaction protection, the Advantage Database has no limits.

ü

Faster Processing – The Advantage Database is designed to do as much of the data processing work on the file server in order to reduce the amount of data that is traveling over the cable in network environment.  This reduction in network traffic and the optimized data filtering processes built into the database engine help in processing the data for reporting and posting much faster and safer.

ü

Improved Security Features – The Advantage Database Server requires a user name and password to open up any table in the system which keeps users from opening up the database tables outside of the AccuBuild Software.  The database can also be configured for encryption so that the information is scrambled when it is written to the disk.  Security is a big issue now that most company networks have a live connection to the internet.

ü

Remote Access Capabilities – The Advantage Database Server can be accessed from a remote location such as a job site or home office or other corporate office locations.

ü

Multiple File Server Options – The Advantage Database Server is not limited to running on the Microsoft Platform.  ADS can run on Linux and Novell file servers.
