Network Installation - Dedicated File Server

The following setup steps are to be performed at the File Server in a network environment:

1.

Install the Advantage Database Server at the File Server by following the installation instructions on the Advantage CD menu.  Select the "Servers" option and then check the appropriate server type.  Select the Windows NT/2000/2003 Option for all versions of Windows including Windows NT, 2000, XP Pro, or 2000 Server.  You will need your Serial Number and Validation Code which can be found on the Advantage Database Information Sheet located inside the CD Case.

Note: It is strongly recommended that all computers on the network are running Windows 2000 or XP Pro.  Windows 98se is not a good solution for a business network environment.

2.

Configure the Advantage Server as follows using the Advantage Configuration Utility:

From the Configuration Utility Tab, select the Database Settings Tab and configure the settings as follows:

Number of Connections:        # of User Licenses x 25 (5 users = 125)

Number of Work Areas:        # of User Licenses x 200 (5 users = 1000)  (Rev. 8207)

Number of Tables:        # of User Licenses x 100 (200 minimum)  (Rev. 8207)

Number of Index Files:        # of User Licenses x 100 (250 minimum)  (Rev.8207)

Number of Data Locks:        7000

3.

Once the settings have been changed, stop the server using the Stop Service Button and then start the server using the Start Service Button.  Select the Database Info Tab and verify the settings under the Configured Column.

4.

Install the Advantage Data Architect (ARC) Utility at the File Server by following the installation instructions on the Advantage CD menu.  Select the "Tools" option and then select the Advantage Data Architect from the list of choices.

5.

Create a shortcut on the server desktop for the ARC Utility which is typically located in the C:\Program Files\Extended Systems\Advantage\ARC Folder.  The program name is arc32.exe.

6.

Create a new shortcut on the server desktop for the Advantage Configuration Utility which is typically located in the C:\Program Files\Extended Systems\Advantage\Server Folder.  The program name is ads_cfg.exe.

7.

Create a new folder on the file server called "ABENT" or any other name you prefer and then mark this as a shared folder with full access for all users of AccuBuild.

8.

Using the AccuBuild Enterprise Edition CD, install the Full Version of the AccuBuild Program at the File Server to the new "ABENT" directory.  After the program has been installed, copy the AccuBuild Serial Number files (INI Files) into the AccuBuild Program Folder (AccuBld8).  These two files include:

Accubld.INI – AccuBuild Serial Number Settings

Aversion.INI – Software Fees Expiration File

If these files are not installed, the program will revert to Demo Mode and you will not be able to process any data.

Important Note: DO NOT set up a new company at this point in the AccuBuild Program.  This process needs to be done from a workstation after all the software has been installed and drive mappings have been established.

9.

If the server is running a local firewall program, then the following error will be encountered: 6420 - Unable to 'discover' the Advantage Database Server.  To prevent the error, the Advantage Server and AccuBuild's ADS.INI file must be configured as follows:

Open the Advantage Configuration Utility at the server.  From the Configuration Utility Tab, select the Communications Tab and enter 2001 into the IP Port field.  Select Apply to save your changes.

Open the ADS.INI file in the Accubld8 directory.  Add the following statements at the bottom of the file:

[ServerName]

Enter the name of your Server in brackets.

LAN_IP=XXX.XXX.XXX.XX

Enter the static IP Address of the Server.

LAN_PORT=2001

Enter the same value entered into the IP Port field in the Advantage Configuration Utility.

The remaining setup steps must be performed from a workstation on the file server.  Before proceeding, you must determine a shared drive letter ("F" or higher) that can be used by all AccuBuild users in the network.  The shared drive letter will be mapped to the "ABENT" Folder or designated shared folder that was set up in step 7 above.  From any user workstation on the network, continue with the setup as follows:

9.

Using the Windows Explorer, map the shared drive letter ("F" or higher) as determined in the previous step to the shared folder on the file server ("ABENT").

10.

Browse the shared drive created in the previous step for the abEnterpriseworkstation.exe program located in the \Accubld8\ClientSetup directory.  Launch the program and follow the installation instructions.  This program will create a shortcut on the workstation's desktop and register the appropriate DLLs.

11.

Launch the AccuBuild Program from the new shortcut and create a new company.  Use the default drive letters (mapped drive) for the company directory and the user directory.

Note: After the company files have been created, the AccuBuild Program should shut down automatically.

12.

Launch the AccuBuild Program and open the new company created in the previous step.  Set up any additional user names by selecting the File | System Administrator | User Maintenance menu option.  Be sure to use the default mappings for the drive letter on the user path. Note: For this workstation only, be sure to select the Printer Assignments Tab and update all the default printer assignments for this workstation. DO NOT update printer assignments for other users from this workstation, printer assignments must be updated at the actual workstation where the user will be working so that the printer driver(s) on the workstation's C Drive can be accessed.

Note: Repeat steps 11 & 12 for any other companies that need to be created in the AccuBuild System. Once your companies have been setup, and if you are a new user to AccuBuild, then refer to the Getting Started Manual for instructions on setting up your data.  If you are an existing user of AccuBuild, please refer to the documentation on importing Paradox tables into the Enterprise Version.

Warning: If the preceding steps were performed at the server instead of the workstation, then the company data files and user tables will be set up on the server's C drive and the workstations will not be able to access the data.  In addition, the ADS.ini file which contains the entries for Crystal Report's aliases will also be listed as drive C and will create errors when printing.  The file locations as listed in the company.db and the users.db settings can be modified manually, and the ads.ini can simply be deleted, but please contact AccuBuild's Technical Support Staff before attempting to make these changes.

13.

Set up the remaining workstations on the network by completing the following steps at each workstation:

a.

Map the network drive letter and creating the desktop shortcut for the AccuBuild Program as outlined in steps 9 & 10 above.

b.

After the drive letter is mapped and the shortcut has been created, launch the program at each workstation and open the each company under the designated user name to make sure the connections are working properly.

c.

After opening the company, look at the sever configuration status bar at the bottom of the AccuBuild Program Screen and verify that the connection type is set to 'Remote'. A Remote Connection Type indicates that the AccuBuild program has successfully logged into the Advantage Database Server.

d.

Update the user's default printer by selecting the File | System Administrator | User Maintenance menu option and choosing the Printer Assignments Tab.

Note: Always make sure that the printer assignments for each user are set up at the user's actual workstation so that the program can access the printer drivers on that user's C Drive.  If you set up printer assignments for a user from a workstation other than the user's workstation, you could create printing issues.

Network Installation – Peer to Peer

Peer to Peer network setups are NOT recommended due to the fact that a user working at the "server" workstation can easily forget that others are logged into the workstation and shut down or reboot the server machine while others are working.  If you only have two or three computers to network, consider setting up a dedicated workstation with Windows 2000 or Windows XP Pro and use it as the file server in your peer to peer network.  Then you can follow the Network Installation Setup Instructions to install the software.  If you must run in a peer to peer environment without a dedicated workstation, you will need to map a common drive letter ("F" or higher) on the server workstation using either the Windows Explorer or the DOS Substitute Command (subst).

Stand Alone Installation - Single User License

The following setup information is for stand alone installations only:

Special Note:  Connection problems with the Advantage Database Server may occur if your stand alone workstation contains a network card but does not connect to a network.  In this scenario, the ADS cannot find the network and does not launch the program.  In order to prevent Windows from testing for a network connection you will need to make a small change to the Windows registry.  Use the following steps to make this change:

Disabling DHCP Media Sensing

1.

Select Run from the Start Menu.  Type: Regedit.exe in the Open field of the Run dialog box, and click OK to launch the Windows Registry Editor.

2.

Select the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE root key in the Registry Editor.

3.

Make the following subkey the current key:

SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters

4.

Select Edit | New | DWORD Value from the Registry Editor's main menu.

5.

Change the name of the new value to DisableDHCPMediaSense.

6.

Right-click the DisableDHCPMediaSense value and select Modify.

7.

Change the value to 1.

8.

Close the Registry Editor and reboot your computer.  ADS should now run normally, whether or not you are connected to a network.

Remote Workstation Access via IP Connection

The Advantage Database Server supports IP Connections for remote access to the company database files.  The procedures for configuring ADS for IP Connections are outlined below:

ü

Set the Port Number for the IP Connection:

1.

Launch the Advantage Configuration Utility at the file server.

2.

Select the Configuration Utility Tab.

3.

Select the Communications Tab.

4.

Enter the Internet Port Number in the field provided.  The ADS documentation recommends using port 2000 and higher and the AccuBuild Program limitations on port numbers will be 4 digits so be sure to use a port number between 2000 and 2999.

Note: One of the connection functions in the AccuBuild System has to strip out the port information from the connection path and this function call requires that the length of the port be 4 digits in length.

5.

Click Apply to set the port number.

Note: If the Advantage Database Server is running, it will need to be restarted before the port changes will take place.

ü

Configure the database connections and users that will be accessing the database via an IP Connection:

1.

Launch the ARC Utility at the file server.

2.

Open each database that requires remote IP Access and set the Internet Option by right clicking on the database icon, selecting the Properties Option and clicking on the Internet Access – Enabled located at the bottom of the properties screen.

3.

Set the Internet Option on for the following users: ADSSYS and ABADMIN by right clicking on the user icon.  For the ABADMIN user, select the Properties Option and for the ADSSYS User simply check the Enable Internet Access Option on the menu.
